Spice Rack Solution

It's safe to say that for the past 8+ years, the spices/seasonings situation in our house has been pretty much a nightmare.

We have moved so often, and we always have a lot going on while we are trying to unpack. By the time I get to the box of spices, I usually just pick a cupboard and throw them all into it. I close the cupboard door and decide that everything is fine...until I need a certain spice or seasoning!

Inevitably, something is about to burn or boil over, and I am frantically rummaging through the cupboard as spice bottles are falling down all around me...all while I am desperately trying to find that one spice I need!

When we lived in Front Royal, we had our friend Heather over to eat a few times. Each time she asked if we had red pepper flakes. I would "look" for them the best I could, but each time I would say the same thing. "Well, I could have sworn we had some, but I can't find them anywhere! Sorry."

Before our move to Charlottesville, Heather helped us pack up some of our kitchen in Front Royal. She came over one morning when I was out of town, and she ended up packing the spice cabinet. I got a text from her informing me that she found TWO BOTTLES of red pepper flakes in the cabinet! Man! I knew it!

So anyway, this time around, I was determined to do something different. I looked on Pinterest and amazon for spice organization solutions. I talked to Ellis, and he helped me look too. I am happy to say that I think he found a winner!

There is a small business on amazon called the Vertical Spice Company (https://www.verticalspice.com/). I have to say that their products are not cheap, but there was truly nothing we could find that compared to the kind of spice rack they offer.

This weekend Ellis and Mac installed our new spice racks.

And here is the finished product!

I made soup on Sunday, and all I had to do was slide out the spice rack when I needed something. My nightmare has officially been replaced with my wildest spice rack dreams come true.

Ellis and Mac had a lot of fun doing other "manly" stuff last weekend. While Ellis worked on his getting his desk and computers set up, Mac worked on taking apart his own old computer that Ellis gave him.

On Saturday afternoon Mac got to spend his nap time with Ellis. They spent the hour building 3-D printers.

Not too shabby, Mac!

Handwriting Without Tears

On Wednesday Mac brought home his very first "homework" assignment. It was handwriting practice. I wondered, did everyone get homework tonight...or just Mac?

I've been trying to work with Mac for a while, and I was really happy with the workbook he brought home.

He showed me what his teacher taught him to help him write the letter "F," and I was really impressed. This seems to be a great method for Mac. He got right to work.

He made a few pretty good "F's," and it was so fun working with him. On one of the last ones, he accidentally made both lines start from the top of the "F."

Instead of being upset, he said, "Mom! Look! I made a squid!"

Then he showed me "an elbow holding a cup" that he made earlier at school.

He had written his name in his book, and he told me that the letters are "holding on to each other."

He is making progress, and I am glad for that. But I will miss these sweet little glimpses into his world through his "letter mistakes!"

David Johns

David.

Johns.

Wow.

Well, this was my first morning home alone with little David. I was dreaming last night about all of the things that I would accomplish with the two bigger kids in school for the morning.

HA!!!!

I will say that it is pretty sweet how he wants to be exactly where I am, no matter what. Not even the best toddler TV show will keep him from engaging with me in whatever task I am working on.

He certainly has his own way of "helping" out!

There was one time this morning that I thought, "wait a minute...where's Davey?" I heard him babbling and laughing, but I could not find him.

Then I saw that the bathroom door was closed. Oh man.

I don't know...was this better than what I expected? I am just not sure anymore.

I have no idea how he did it, but he was sitting in the sink...brushing his hair in the mirror with Corrie's toothbrush!

Yep, that's Davey!

And I think I am going like having a morning each week with just him. :)

Wecome to C'ville

Well, as of yesterday, we have officially spent our first week in "C'ville" (as the locals call it...which I guess includes us now!)

As opposed to our move to Front Royal, where we seemed to integrate with the community slowly and quietly, it feels like we have already jumped in with both feet to our activities and life in Charlottesville.

On Monday we had our first breakfast together in our new home, which turned out to be donuts and milk! It was a pretty big hit.

One of the first things we set up was the TV. We don't have "television" shows yet, but we can watch movies using our computer. The poor kids have been glued to the TV as the chaos of unpacking swirls around them.

On Wednesday we enrolled Mac in a little half-day Kindergarten at the baptist church a few blocks away. He was so cute on his "first day of school." It was "orange" day, so he got to wear one of his favorite super hero shirts, and he also insisted on wearing the bracelets that Calvin made him and his Iron Man watch. :)

Before I knew it, (and I am not really sure how this happened), I had Corrie signed up for two days a week at the same school. She loves it. No matter how many times I call it "pre-school," Corrie keeps thinking it is called "pretty school." So cute.

I can't be more encouraged or pleased with the godly teachers and wonderful environment that the kids are in at this school. I thought sending them to school in the mornings would negate homeschooling, but I am finding that having them away for a few hours of the day has actually helped to structure our home learning so much better than before.

I am enjoying having mornings to work with Corrie and about an hour in the afternoon with just Mac while the other two nap. Here was Mac eating a bagel after he got home one day after school. Pretty happy little guy!

Davey and I went to our first day of Community Bible Study together on Thursday, and he had the best time. It is pretty sweet having a special activity that just me and Davey do together.

We also happen to have the all-time best climbing tree I have ever seen right in our front yard! The kids have enjoyed playing outside here in the evenings.

Corrie has decided that she needs to "stretch her legs" every day, so she has taken to "running around the block" (running in a circle in our front yard).

When I first saw the house, I thought the backyard would be a terrible place for the kids to play (all rocks and no grass), but it has actually also been fun for them. Another very pleasant surprise!

Mac has enjoyed discovering the different bugs that we have here. Much to my dismay, he is seems to be partial spiders right now (more on that at a different time), and he is loving the plethora of Daddy Long Legs in our backyard.

He begged me to take a close-up picture of the Daddy Long Legs so we could see all of its eyes :)

While Mac was playing with his spider, Corrie came over and told me she had been shaving. I was shocked and worried. She is already trying to shave?! Then she put some pencil shavings on my leg. She was just shaving pencils. I guess she is still our little girl for a little longer at least!

Thursday morning was the first morning that I was able to get up in time to read my Bible a little bit before all of the kids were up. I sat down and accidentally dumped an entire steaming hot cup of coffee all over myself, the couch and my Bible. So much for that idea!

I thought it was a perfect opportunity to try out the clothesline I had discovered the day before. It turned out to be a little saggy.

Thursday was also the day that our new washer/dryer set was scheduled to be delivered. Since we had to purchase our own set for this house, I had not been able to do laundry for several days. The mountain of soiled linens and clothes was huge by the time Thursday rolled around. I was really relieved when they were delivered on time and Ellis set them up for me!

Have you seen how they make washers/dryers these days? I feel like I need another degree to figure out how operate them, but I am so, so, so grateful. The kids are amazed by the clothes being washed and dried...so funny!

Yesterday morning we took a walk to our neighborhood park. I can't even tell you how beautiful it is.

I have been blown away by how great this town is, how well-suited our house seems to be for us, how much God seems to be providing for us at every turn, and how just plain happy everyone seems here.

I even found out a little while ago that Charlottesville was just voted the happiest city in America. (http://www.dailyprogress.com/news/joy-town-u-s-a-charlottesville-named-america-s-happiest/article_394b5170-127b-11e4-94db-0017a43b2370.html)

Seriously, it is really, really different than what we are used to. I have felt pretty overwhelmed at times by all of the sudden changes.

Poor Ellis. Last night we rented a movie and sat down on the couch together after the kids were in bed. He tried his best to understand why I would be crying and overwhelmed while also telling him how wonderful everything here was at the same time. I was so grateful for his insight and prayers for me.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the movie God had unexpectedly provided for us (Mom's Night Out). It got terrible reviews with the mainstream media, but we loved it. It could have been the state of moving delirium we are in, but we laughed and cried and everything in between. It was pretty awesome.

And then this morning we went to church at the same place that we attended when we interviewed here back in May. I cannot even tell you how extremely good it was.

I found myself looking around and pondering how very different it was from our church back in Front Royal...almost polar opposites in many ways. The culture in Charlottesville is so different than the culture in Front Royal, but somehow it still felt like home to me. Another pleasant surprise!

We all dressed up a little more than usual today, and I thought the kids looked pretty cute on the way home from church.

Davey probably fit in the best with Charlottesville's stylish culture with his cool hair-do this morning. It looked like we had styled it with hair gel, but it was actually ranch dressing that he had rubbed in his hair right before we left. I dunked his head under the sink as we were walking out the door, and his hair looked like this for the rest of the day.
(This was the best picture I could get. Poor tired little guy).

Earlier today a lady from Ellis' new office came by and surprised us with a meal for dinner tonight. She was so kind, and it was easy to see that she really loves the Lord. We all felt at home with her immediately, and it seemed like we had known her for a long time and not just a few minutes!

And that sort of thing has just been happening over and over again this past week.

We ended our evening by visiting the neighborhood park again. There was a community potluck earlier, and we got to meet a few people who were still hanging around. Mac found a caterpillar, which was the highlight of his and Corrie's day.

Here is Mac holding up the caterpillar in front of our house on the way back home.

And that pretty much sums up our first week in Charlottesville!

Davey Knievel

Today I took a minute to look over the list of draft posts that are waiting to be published. Here's one that made me cringe and smile at the same time.

A while back I took some pictures of Davey and his various injuries that he had at the time. He is the most fearless, excited, adventurous little toddler. His passion is endearing, but also pretty dangerous.

He never lets an "oww-ie" keep him down for long though!

This is how he is at the splashpad and any kind of water source he can find. He is ALL IN!

Don't remember the cause of this bruise

A black fingernail that fell off a few days later. He had climbed up on a chair and tipped it completely over.

Just your average scraped knees and black eyes

I smile when I see his fun-loving personality, but I cringe to think of how many opportunities for x-treme sports there are these days!

I am hoping he will take to Ellis teaching him Chess ;)

California Vetterleins

This past weekend I (Amanda) flew to California to visit Jeremy, Joy and 2-month-old Ellie. It has been such a long time since I have spent time with my brother. What a gift to get a glimpse of his life and sweet family in Brea!

I was pretty excited to see Jeremy when he picked me up at LAX...so excited that I took a picture!

Ellie was laying on the ground when we got home, smiling and wiggling and making all of those of sweet baby noises that I had already forgotten.

Jeremy and Joy were so great about being intentional to make sure that I had lots of time with Ellie. I will tell you one thing: that little girl will really grow on you!

On Saturday evening, Joy and I went to downtown Brea. I could not get enough of the trees and overall scenery all weekend. It is so different than where we live. I felt like I was in a movie set all the time.

We went to Old Navy, where Joy and I reenacted the show "What Not to Wear." I left with almost a whole new wardrobe! (Well, by my standards at least).

On Sunday we went for a walk to the grocery store after church. It was such a nice afternoon.

We were crossing the street on the way home, and I was drinking in the sights of the trees, houses and mountains all around us. I wanted to take a picture, so I did. Unfortunately, it was in the middle of street, and Jeremy is saying, "Wait until we get across the street to take pictures!"

Here is the view from their street. Pretty good place for a family picture!

Joy and I realized that we didn't have any pictures of the two of us, so we decided to get one.

We were glad Ellie managed to sneak into the frame with us! I feel pretty special to be included in Ellis' first photobomb :)

Later, Jeremy and I went out to get a couple more things for dinner and we stopped to take in a really beautiful sunset. I loved looking at the mountains there. They are so different than our mountains!

When we got home, we spent a little time with Ellie before bed, and all three of us gave her a bath in her new bath tub. She looked pretty cute in her little bathrobe!

This is one of my favorite family photos from the weekend. So much going on in this scene!

It was pretty sad to have to say goodbye on Monday morning. I was so grateful for so much time with Jeremy, Joy and Ellie. I think one of my favorite things is how much closer I feel to them now. I am so glad to know what their life is like and be a part of it!

I got to see another spectacular sunset on the way home, and it reminded me of my family in California who love a good sunset :)
